Beyond vase mode

Vase mode prints one wall as a single climbing spiral, no seam and nothing to retract. A spiral only traces a shell, so a thick wall or a closed top is simply not printed. The usual workaround, extra walls with no infill and no top layers, gets close and leaves the lid off.

Spliner routes the part as one volume, so there is no shell to trace. On a solid part a thick wall or a closed top is no special case, just more of the same route, laid as one bead.

Curves without the staircase

A shallow curve built from flat layers comes out as a staircase. Thinner layers make the steps smaller and the print slower, and the layer lines that remain are sanded off.

Spliner has no layers to step. The route is non-planar from the first bead to the last, so it follows a curved surface instead of stepping it. The lines on the surface are the beads themselves, running with the curve.

Load path, not infill pattern

An FEA result already knows which way the load runs through a part. Where the stress plot runs hot, a slicer can add material, extra walls and denser infill, and every line of it lies flat in its layer, whichever way the load runs.

Spliner treats the part as one volume, so a bead is free to leave the plane. The directions from the analysis, uploaded as a bias field on Business, guide the route alongside everything else it has to do. The bead runs with the load.

Fewer restarts to hide

Every restart leaves a mark, a blob where the nozzle picks up and stringing where it left. Moving the seam and tuning retraction make each mark smaller, never fewer. One stop for every island, on every layer.

Spliner keeps the bead down until it has to leave the part. The stops that remain are the ones the shape forces, not the ones the slicing does. Between them there is nothing to retract.

Travel moves you can count

A travel move is distance the machine covers with nothing coming out. Where a layer splits into islands, each has to be reached over the top, however well the trips are ordered.

Spliner routes the part as one volume, so there are no islands. What a layer would have stranded is reached through the part, the bead laying material the whole way. The bead leaves only where the shape offers no way through.
